8 Patio Door Design Trends for Modern Homes

A patio door used to be a fairly simple choice. Pick a style, choose a colour, and make sure it lets enough light into the room. That has changed. Today’s patio door design trends are being shaped by how people actually live – with open-plan layouts, garden rooms, energy-conscious upgrades and a clear focus on making every square metre work harder.

For homeowners, that means better-looking doors with stronger thermal performance and more flexibility in layout. For trade professionals, it means clients are arriving with sharper expectations around sightlines, thresholds, security and finish. The best results come from understanding which trends have real long-term value and which are simply passing looks.

Patio door design trends that are changing the brief

The strongest trend is a move towards larger glazed areas with less visible frame. People want to maximise light and space, but they do not want the door system to dominate the view. That is why slim aluminium profiles continue to gain ground, especially on extensions and rear elevations where the garden becomes part of the living space.

This does not mean every project should aim for the thinnest possible frame. Sightlines matter, but so do budget, structural requirements and the size of the opening. In some homes, a slightly chunkier frame can feel more in keeping with the property, particularly where heritage influence or more traditional fenestration is part of the design.

Another noticeable shift is that patio doors are no longer being treated as a purely practical access point. They are a design feature in their own right. Homeowners are choosing door systems earlier in the renovation process because the product affects flooring transitions, furniture layouts, ventilation and even how a room faces the sun through the day.

Bigger glass, cleaner lines

Minimal framing is still one of the clearest design directions in the market. Sliding doors with narrow interlocks and bifold systems with neater profiles are popular because they create a more open feel without asking for major stylistic compromise.

In practical terms, cleaner lines work especially well in kitchen extensions, garden rooms and contemporary self-builds. They support the wider trend towards simple, light-filled interiors. They also suit mixed-material schemes, where brick, render, timber and metal are all being used together and the glazing needs to look crisp rather than decorative.

There is a trade-off, though. The more glass you introduce, the more important the specification becomes. Solar gain, privacy and orientation all need careful thought. A large south-facing opening can be brilliant in winter and uncomfortable in peak summer if the glazing choice is wrong.

Sliding doors are gaining ground

Bifold doors remain a strong choice, but many current schemes are leaning towards sliding doors for a calmer, more architectural look. They allow for wide glazed panels, uninterrupted views and a less segmented appearance when closed.

That does not make sliding doors automatically better. If the priority is opening up the full width of an aperture for entertaining or garden access, bifolds still have a clear advantage. The right choice depends on how the space will actually be used, not just which image is trending on a mood board.

Low thresholds and level transitions

One of the most practical patio door design trends is the push for flush or low-threshold detail. People want the inside and outside to feel connected, and a step at the door can interrupt that effect. It also matters for accessibility, especially in family homes, downsizing projects and multi-generational properties.

A level transition helps create the impression that the patio, deck or paving is an extension of the room. Visually, it makes spaces feel larger. Functionally, it supports smoother movement between house and garden.

This trend needs careful detailing. Drainage, finished floor levels and external landscaping all need to be coordinated properly. A flush threshold can look excellent, but only if the wider build-up has been planned around it.

Dark finishes are still popular, but softer colours are rising

Anthracite grey remains a reliable choice for patio doors, and for good reason. It works with modern brick, render and timber cladding, and it gives glazed systems a strong, premium look. Black also continues to appeal where homeowners want contrast and a sharper architectural edge.

That said, there is a growing move towards softer, warmer tones. Olive greys, muted bronzes, off-blacks and heritage-inspired shades are becoming more common, particularly in renovations where a pure dark grey can feel too stark. These colours sit more comfortably with natural materials and slightly softer interior palettes.

For many projects, colour is no longer just about matching windows. It is about shaping the whole feel of the rear elevation. Dual-colour options are also useful here, allowing a cleaner external statement and a warmer internal finish.

Better thermal performance is now part of the design conversation

A few years ago, energy efficiency was often treated as a technical point to be checked later. Now it is part of the buying decision from the start. Homeowners want doors that brighten the home without making the room colder in winter or harder to regulate year-round.

This has changed the way people assess products. U-values, glazing options and frame materials are being weighed alongside sightlines and colour. Aluminium remains popular because of its strength and style, while modern thermally broken systems have helped address historic concerns about heat loss.

For trade buyers, this matters because clients are increasingly aware of performance claims. The visual appeal still gets attention first, but it is the combination of appearance and efficiency that closes the sale.

Glazing specification matters more than ever

Triple glazing is not automatically necessary on every patio door, and in some cases a well-specified double-glazed unit will be the better fit for budget and weight. What matters is matching the glass to the property, the opening size and the orientation.

Solar control glass, low-emissivity coatings and acoustic improvements can all add genuine value. This is where consultative support becomes useful, because the best specification is rarely a one-size-fits-all decision.

Indoor-outdoor living is becoming more considered

The idea of opening up the home is still a major driver, but the design approach is becoming more refined. Instead of simply installing the widest doors possible, people are thinking more carefully about how patio doors connect with kitchens, dining zones and garden layouts.

That means sightlines to focal points in the garden, better alignment with paving outside, and more thought about where door leaves stack or slide. It also means balancing openness with wall space, storage and furniture placement indoors.

This is good news for projects overall, because it leads to better decisions. A door should support the way the room works every day, not just on the two hottest weekends of the year.

Heritage influence is shaping some modern schemes

Not every trend is heading towards ultra-minimal contemporary glazing. There is also rising demand for patio doors that feel more character-led, particularly in period renovations, barn conversions and homes where a softer architectural style is preferred.

Steel-look aluminium systems, more traditional bar layouts and heritage colours are helping homeowners get the light they want without losing the building’s identity. This approach works especially well where the rear extension is modern but still needs to sit comfortably alongside the original property.

It is a useful reminder that good design is not about following one look. It is about choosing a system that suits the architecture and improves the daily use of the space.

Customisation is now expected, not optional

One of the biggest shifts in the market is how much buyers expect to tailor the product. Opening configuration, panel sizes, hardware, cill options, glazing upgrades and colour choices are all part of the conversation now.

For homeowners, that makes premium glazing more achievable because the product can be shaped around the project rather than forced into a standard format. For installers and builders, it makes early specification more important because the exact configuration affects lead times, structural openings and installation details.

This is where a supplier with strong technical support can add real value. Being able to design products online, review options clearly and access specification guidance helps prevent costly changes later.

Smart security and cleaner hardware

Security is not a flashy trend, but it is absolutely influencing design. Buyers want doors that look minimal without feeling lightweight or vulnerable. That has pushed demand towards better locking systems, stronger profiles and more refined hardware that does not interrupt the overall finish.

Handles and accessories are becoming more coordinated too. Instead of being treated as an afterthought, hardware is part of the visual scheme, whether the preference is for a contemporary black finish, brushed metal or something more understated.

The best patio doors now combine strong security with a cleaner appearance. That balance matters, especially in family homes where peace of mind is every bit as important as aesthetics.

When you are planning a new opening, an extension or a full property upgrade, trends are useful only if they improve the result. The smartest choice is usually the one that gives you more light, better performance and a layout that feels right long after the design fashions have moved on.

Ordered bi-folds as well as a number of windows as part of a house extension and was extremely pleased with the results. From start to finish Josh and the team were so very helpful guiding me through the online ordering process, answering questions that I thought were stupid! It felt like dealing with a showroom not a website. They kept in touch with delivery dates and followed up a week later. Great service (very rare these days) I wouldn't hesitate to recommend. My doors went in today and the builders said they were easy to install and good quality. I am delighted with them. They look incredible. I will post pictures when they are complete. Amazing value for a bespoke door. 5 stars all round
