Can Bifold Doors Open Outside? What to Consider

A new extension can look perfect on a floor plan, then lose its appeal when an inward-opening door takes up valuable room around a dining table or kitchen island. So, can bifold doors open outside? Yes. Outward-opening bifold doors are a popular and practical choice for UK homes, provided the opening direction is specified correctly from the start.

The best option depends on how you use the room, the space available on the patio or decking, local site conditions and the door system itself. Getting these details right helps you maximise light and space without creating an awkward route into the garden.

Can bifold doors open outside safely?

Most contemporary aluminium bifold doors can be made to open either inwards or outwards. The panels fold and stack to one or both sides of the opening, while a designated traffic door gives everyday access without folding back the full set.

With an outward-opening configuration, the folded panels sit outside when the doors are fully open. This keeps the internal floor area clear, which is particularly useful in compact kitchens, garden rooms and extensions where furniture needs to stay close to the glazed opening.

Outward opening is safe when the doors are correctly designed, fitted and secured. Modern systems use multi-point locking, toughened safety glass where required and engineered hinges and rollers designed for the panel weight. The direction of travel does not make a quality bifold door inherently less secure. What matters is the specification, installation quality and whether the external area allows the doors to operate without obstruction.

Why homeowners choose outward-opening bifolds

The main benefit is simple: they free up space inside. When doors open into a kitchen-diner, lounge or conservatory, the stacked panels can encroach on seating, worktops or walkways. Sending the panels outwards keeps the room flexible, especially during parties, family meals and summer entertaining.

An outward-opening arrangement can also create a neater connection with a patio. If the panels stack against an external return wall, they can sit out of sight from the main garden view while leaving a wide, clear opening between the house and outdoor living area.

For trade projects, external stacking may make it easier to meet the client’s furniture layout and access brief without changing the aperture size. It can be a worthwhile choice where every square metre of internal space has been carefully planned.

There is an aesthetic consideration too. When the doors are open, outward-folding panels can make the interior feel less visually busy. The threshold and opening remain clear, helping the garden feel like a genuine extension of the room.

When inward opening may be the better choice

Outward-opening doors are not automatically the right answer. They need a clear, level space outside, and that is not available on every property.

If the doors open directly onto a narrow path, small balcony, shared access route or raised deck, external panels may become a nuisance or a hazard. A door should never swing or fold into a public pavement, neighbour’s land or a route people need to use. This is particularly relevant for front or side elevations, rather than the sheltered rear garden openings where bifolds are most often installed.

Inward opening can make more sense where the outside area is exposed to strong wind. A sudden gust can put pressure on open panels, so a sheltered inward-stacking design may be more comfortable to manage in coastal, elevated or particularly exposed locations. This does not rule out outward-opening bifolds, but it does make professional assessment more valuable.

You should also think about planting, furniture and practical garden use. Outdoor sofas, planters, barbecue areas and steps can quickly reduce the clear space required for folding panels. It is easy to focus on the view through closed doors and overlook how much room the panels occupy when open.

Space, stacking and traffic-door layout

Before choosing an opening direction, stand back from the aperture and picture the doors in everyday use. Where will the panels stack? Which way will the lead door open? Will someone be able to step outside easily to hang washing, let the dog out or carry food to the patio?

The traffic door is the panel used most frequently. It can usually be positioned at either end of the configuration, depending on the system and design. Place it where it gives the most natural route between the kitchen, living area and garden. If the main path is on the left, for example, a left-hand traffic door may prevent people walking across the entire opening each time they go outside.

Panel stacking should also be agreed early. A three-panel bifold may stack entirely to one side, while wider systems can split and stack in both directions. The correct arrangement depends on the sightlines you want, the usable external wall space and how often you expect to fully open the doors.

Do not rely on terms such as “left opening” without checking the supplier’s viewing convention. Door handing can be described from inside or outside, and getting it wrong can affect the entire layout. A clear drawing showing the viewing side, traffic door, fold direction and stacking position avoids expensive mistakes.

Weather performance and thresholds

A common concern is whether outward-opening bifolds are more likely to let in rain. In a properly specified system, weather performance is built into the frame, seals, glazing and drainage design rather than determined by opening direction alone.

External doors should have effective weather seals and drainage channels that direct water away from the frame. The threshold needs particular attention. A low threshold creates a cleaner transition and can support easier access, but it must be installed with suitable drainage and correctly finished external levels. Water should not be allowed to sit against the threshold after heavy rain.

This is one area where the installation matters as much as the product. Patio falls, paving levels, drainage slots and sealant details all affect the finished result. Discuss these features before the opening is prepared, especially for new-build extensions and projects aiming for a near-flush indoor-outdoor floor level.

For exposed rear elevations, consider the local weather pattern, the degree of shelter and whether a canopy or overhang is planned. A small roof projection can reduce direct rain on the glazing and create a more usable patio threshold, though it should be designed without compromising daylight into the room.

Security, safety and everyday use

Premium bifold systems are designed to secure each panel when closed, typically using multi-point locking on the main access door and interlocking panel sections across the set. For ground-floor doors, specify appropriate security performance and glazing for the project rather than choosing based on opening direction alone.

When open, the practical safety question is usually about the external area. Make sure children, pets and guests cannot collide with panels that project onto a walkway. Door retainers or hold-open catches can be useful where the site is breezy, but they should be selected to suit the particular system rather than added as an afterthought.

It is also worth considering cleaning. Outward-opening doors may be easier to wipe down from inside in some layouts, while external stacking can leave the outer faces more exposed to garden debris. Aluminium frames are low maintenance, but tracks should be kept clear of leaves, grit and standing water so the rollers continue to operate smoothly.

Choosing the right bifold specification

Opening direction should sit within the wider door specification. Frame material, thermal performance, glass choice, sightlines, colour, panel count and threshold design all shape the finished result.

Aluminium bifolds are often chosen for wider apertures because their strong, slim profiles can support larger glass areas and a contemporary look. They are available in a wide range of colours, including popular dark finishes and contrasting internal and external options. uPVC bifolds can offer a cost-effective alternative for suitable openings, although configuration and panel sizes may be more limited depending on the system.

For an extension that is being designed around an open-plan kitchen or garden room, it is sensible to finalise the furniture plan and external landscaping before ordering. Horizon Windows and Doors can help homeowners and trade customers work through configuration details, technical documents and bespoke options before a door is manufactured.

A clear opening starts with a clear plan

Outward-opening bifold doors are an excellent way to keep an extension feeling open, bright and usable. They work best where there is enough clear patio space, a well-planned drainage detail and a stacking arrangement that supports how the household actually moves through the home.

Rather than choosing inward or outward opening as a default, map the route from kitchen to garden, check the space on both sides of the threshold and confirm the configuration on a drawing. A few decisions made before installation can give you a wide, practical opening that feels right every day of the year.

Can’t praise this local company enough. We had a broken bi fold hinge which needed immediate attention and they came out quickly and sorted it temporarily so we could use the main part of the door. Once the new hinge arrived they fitted it asap and advised re upkeep of doors going forward. Both Rob and Josh were great to deal with and they were so reasonably priced for the work. Highly recommended and will definitely use again.

From start to finish Josh and the team were so very helpful guiding me through the online ordering process, answering questions that I thought were stupid! It felt like dealing with a showroom not a website. They kept in touch with delivery dates and followed up a week later. Great service (very rare these days) I wouldn't hesitate to recommend. My doors went in today and the builders said they were easy to install and good quality. I am delighted with them. They look incredible. I will post pictures when they are complete. Amazing value for a bespoke door. 5 stars all round
