How to Specify Aluminium Windows Online for Your Home

A new window should do more than fill an opening. It needs to bring in light, suit the character of the property, meet current performance requirements and arrive ready for a trouble-free installation. The ability to specify aluminium windows online makes this process quicker and more transparent, provided you make the key decisions in the right order.

Aluminium is a strong choice for contemporary extensions, garden rooms, replacement windows and larger glazed elevations. Its inherent strength allows for slim frames and generous glass areas, while modern thermally broken systems deliver the insulation values expected in a UK home. The online configurator is there to turn those design ambitions into a clear product specification – not to replace the checks that protect your budget and your build programme.

Start with the opening, not the frame size

The most common and costly mistake is ordering to the visible gap rather than the correct survey dimension. Measure the structural opening in several places across the width and height, then use the smallest measurement as your starting point. Check the diagonals too. If they differ significantly, the opening may be out of square and will need allowance during installation.

Your finished frame size should allow for fitting tolerances, packers and sealant. The required deduction depends on the installation method and the condition of the opening, so avoid assuming that the product should match the brick-to-brick measurement exactly. For a refurbishment project, remove or account for the existing frame, renders, tiles and internal finishes that could affect the true opening.

For large, high-value installations, a professional survey offers valuable reassurance. This is particularly relevant for bay windows, shaped openings, exposed locations and projects where new steelwork or structural alterations are involved. A well-configured window cannot compensate for an opening that has been measured incorrectly.

How to specify aluminium windows online step by step

Begin by selecting the product type and the way each sash needs to operate. Fixed panes maximise glass and daylight, making them ideal beside doors or within a wide picture window. Casement windows offer familiar ventilation and can be configured with side-hung or top-hung opening sashes. Tilt-and-turn windows provide another option where controlled ventilation, easy cleaning or an inward-opening arrangement is useful.

Think about how the room is used before choosing the layout. A top-hung opener can ventilate a kitchen or bathroom without creating an outward obstruction, while a larger side-hung casement may be better suited to a bedroom that needs an emergency escape route. In a home office or living room, a combination of fixed and opening sections often gives the cleanest appearance while keeping ventilation where it is needed.

When configuring online, work through the specification in this order:

  • confirm the frame width, height and overall arrangement;
  • choose fixed, side-hung, top-hung or tilt-and-turn sections;
  • select the internal and external colour finish;
  • set the glazing, including safety glass where required;
  • choose handles, hardware and any ventilation options;
  • review the drawing, dimensions and technical details before ordering.

This sequence keeps design decisions connected to practical requirements. It also makes it easier for an installer, architect or building control officer to review what has been selected.

Choose sightlines that suit the building

Aluminium windows are valued for their slim profiles, but not every system has the same appearance. A modern flush or contemporary aluminium frame works naturally with extensions, new builds and clean-lined renovations. Heritage-style aluminium windows use more traditional proportions, often with glazing bars, to better suit period properties and conservation-minded projects.

The right choice depends on the elevation as much as the individual window. If the same room includes bifold or sliding doors, consider the frame depth, colour and visible sightlines together. Matching finishes across glazed elements creates a more considered result, even where the systems are not identical.

Be realistic about glazing bars. They can add character, but they also reduce the uninterrupted glass area and may affect cost. For a period-style project, they can be worth it. For a modern rear extension built around garden views, a simpler configuration is often the stronger choice.

Get glazing and thermal performance right

The glass is responsible for most of the window area, so it has a major influence on comfort. Double glazing is a popular, efficient option for many residential projects. Triple glazing may improve thermal performance and reduce external noise in some situations, but it adds weight, changes the visual balance of slim frames and is not automatically the best value for every property.

Look at the whole-window U-value rather than the centre-pane figure alone. The whole-window result accounts for the frame, glass and edge details, giving a more useful indication of overall performance. Your required target will depend on whether the project is a replacement, extension or new build, and on the requirements set by building control.

Solar control glass deserves attention on south- and west-facing elevations, especially where large areas of glazing face a garden or open-plan living space. It can reduce solar gain and glare, helping rooms stay more comfortable in bright weather. The trade-off is that some solar-control coatings slightly alter the appearance of the glass and can reduce the amount of light entering the room. Orientation, shading, roof overhangs and ventilation should all inform the decision.

Safety glazing is another essential rather than an upgrade. Toughened or laminated safety glass may be needed in low-level glazing, near doors, around stairways and in other critical locations. Laminated glass can also support improved acoustic performance and security, depending on the specification.

Do not leave ventilation and compliance until last

Replacement windows and new openings can trigger Building Regulations requirements. Energy efficiency is only one part of the picture. Background ventilation, purge ventilation, safety glazing and means of escape may all need to be considered.

Trickle vents are a frequent point of discussion because homeowners often prefer the cleanest possible frame line. Yet where they are required, omitting them can create an avoidable compliance issue. Some configurations can integrate ventilation more discreetly than others, so decide early rather than trying to add it after the frame design is complete.

For bedrooms, check whether the window must provide an emergency escape opening. This is not simply about selecting an opening sash. The clear openable area, height and width matter, and furniture or external obstructions can affect the practical escape route. An experienced installer or building control professional can confirm what applies to the specific project.

Planning permission is not usually required for like-for-like replacement windows, but exceptions apply. Listed buildings, conservation areas, restrictive planning conditions and properties under an Article 4 Direction may limit changes to material, colour or design. Heritage-style aluminium can be a practical alternative where traditional appearance is important, but always verify local requirements before placing an order.

Select colours and hardware for long-term use

Anthracite grey, black and white remain popular choices, but aluminium gives you far more flexibility than a standard palette. A dual-colour finish can keep a darker external façade while using a lighter internal colour to brighten the room. This works particularly well where a modern extension meets a more traditional interior.

Consider the surroundings too. Dark frames can create a crisp architectural contrast, but they may show dust and water marks more readily in exposed areas. Coastal or highly exposed properties benefit from careful consideration of finish, hardware and maintenance requirements. A high-quality powder-coated finish is made for long-term performance, but regular cleaning remains sensible.

Handle style and colour may feel like a small decision, yet they are the parts you touch every day. Choose hardware that complements your doors and interior fittings, but prioritise practical operation and secure locking. If windows are being fitted upstairs or in difficult-to-reach places, consider how they will be opened, cleaned and maintained over time.

Check delivery, access and installation before you order

Aluminium windows are made to order, so a final specification should be treated as final. Before approving it, review the opening direction, dimensions, glass type, colour, cill requirements and any add-ons against the drawing. It is worth having a second person – ideally the installer – check the order before it goes into production.

Delivery planning matters for larger frames and glazed units. Confirm that there is suitable access for the delivery vehicle, a safe place to store products upright and dry, and enough people or lifting equipment available on installation day. Glass and aluminium can be damaged if handled carelessly, and delays on site can quickly disrupt follow-on trades.

A good supplier should make technical information easy to access and provide knowledgeable support when a configuration needs checking. Horizon Windows and Doors combines online specification with UK-based guidance, helping homeowners and trade customers move from dimensions and design choices to an order they can place with confidence.

The best time to ask a technical question is before the window is made. Take a final pause over the drawing, check it against the opening and room layout, and make sure every choice supports the way you want your home to look and feel for years to come.

Can’t praise this local company enough. We had a broken bi fold hinge which needed immediate attention and they came out quickly and sorted it temporarily so we could use the main part of the door. Once the new hinge arrived they fitted it asap and advised re upkeep of doors going forward. Both Rob and Josh were great to deal with and they were so reasonably priced for the work. Highly recommended and will definitely use again.

From start to finish Josh and the team were so very helpful guiding me through the online ordering process, answering questions that I thought were stupid! It felt like dealing with a showroom not a website. They kept in touch with delivery dates and followed up a week later. Great service (very rare these days) I wouldn't hesitate to recommend. My doors went in today and the builders said they were easy to install and good quality. I am delighted with them. They look incredible. I will post pictures when they are complete. Amazing value for a bespoke door. 5 stars all round
